(I wrote the component for Laszlo Mail and contributed to the OpenLaszlo platform a while back.) All the code is available so you can do what you like. The tooltip controller class is less than 100 lines of code, with another 50 lines of code for the tooltip view which is designed to be easily replaced if you want to chage the look of the component.
