I like to use different terminal windows for my different playpens, so I can keep multiple states and easily toggle between them by switching windows. In emacs, I can use shell buffers with different names, but most terminal programs will display your current directory. So here's how I do it:

I use a shell function, set-lps, that I just need to execute once in the shell window once I have cd-ed to the playpen I want to work in.
